In the morning, we will leave from your location and drive through the beautiful Moroccan countryside to reach Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Meknes was founded in the 11th century and became a great capital under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century.
When we arrive in Meknes, we will visit Bab Mansour, one of the most famous and beautiful gates in Morocco. Built in the early 18th century, it was designed by a Christian convert to Islam and is known for its grand size and stunning decoration. Next, we will explore the Heri es-Souani granaries, which were once used to store food and water for the city and Sultan Moulay Ismail’s army.
These massive granaries were built with special cooling techniques to keep food fresh. We will also see the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the tomb of the powerful sultan who ruled Morocco for 55 years. His leadership helped make Meknes a grand imperial city. After that, we will walk through the old medina (old city) and visit the colorful local souks (markets), where merchants have sold goods for centuries.
At lunchtime, we will stop at a local restaurant to enjoy a delicious Moroccan meal. After lunch, we will go to Volubilis, an ancient Roman city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Volubilis was an important Roman settlement around 2,000 years ago and was the capital of the Roman province of Mauretania.
Here, we will see old stone buildings, beautiful floor mosaics that show Roman gods and daily life, and big archways from Roman times. The ruins give us a glimpse into life in Morocco during the Roman Empire. In the evening, we will drive back while enjoying the peaceful countryside views. You will return back to Fes with great memories of the trip
